Forum > Vray Light select

Hi Fred,
Great site! I've learned a lot from you, specifically in the compositing and LWF area. My question is about the Vray light select render element.
In the chaos group video on this element, see below, it gives the impression that you can build a complete scene and just add the lights in and adjust them how you please. sounds great! put your lights in the scene, save heaps of time by not tweaking the lights, and just add the lights in photoshop, or if you're animating, AE or nuke.
I created an interior scene. I first attempted to use the vray global illumination pass, as in your comping tutorial, however this pass includes the GI generated by the other lights in the scene. what i would like is a base GI layer, so i can add the separate lights element by element.
So I've created a scene where I have multiple light select elements, One for my Vray dome light to give me my 'base', and light elements for lamps etc.
just so you know my scene is an attic, lit by a dome light, no hdr or anything, with light portals at the window, a bit like the one in your comping tutorial.
what i have found is the light element seems to record the direct light, not the GI, so instead of getting nice light bouncing around in the nooks and crannies, i get a strong light that's pretty noisy and doesn't get very far at all.
Do you think it's possible to do this and have this workflow? How is it possible to capture the true GI without the light contribution from other light sources?
It seems like a bit of a mystery, I'm pretty new to genuine compositing, i usually use the beauty pass and add various render elements
I have put some links below, the third tutorial leads me to believe that exterior views may not have this problem.
Additionally, It appears that the Maya version of the light select has a few more options, diffuse & spec,
Thanks Fred, hope I'm not asking too much! would really like to know your thoughts on this,
Tim
